Religion at its best

What is going on???

It seems that now not being involved in a Sunday morning church service on a regular basis really gets some people asking questions, mainly those who are attending a Sunday morning church service mind you.
Here's just some of the questions / statements given towards us as a family of late.
  • 'You have more faith if you attend church'.
  • 'Going to church shows you are a Christian'
  • 'You show you love God more if you attend church'.
  • 'If you give up something to go to church on a Sunday morning you are showing God you are committed to Him'
  • When the bible says 'don't give up meeting together' what do you think of that?
  • You should be spending time worshiping God on the Sabbath.
  • God loves you more if you attend church
What is going on? Well, probably nothing unusual from people in the local church really because it's probably the same judgement towards us that has either blasted people out of their pews on a Sunday morning or caused most people in Australia to ask why on earth they would bother following a god who just points the finger, which is often the impression given by the people who say they follow a loving god and son in Jesus.
So now i have a few questions.
Where in the bible does it say that going to a place shows you are more of a Christian? Doesn't it say by your fruit you will be known? Is it at all possible that you could attend church on Sunday but be the most unloving un-fruiful person around? If so is it also possible that you could grow and be more fruitful in the community and the people you meet without attending a church service? Where in the bible does it say that the sabbath should be spent at a church service and where in the bible does it say that a church service is where you have to 'meet'?
Can God love me more if i go to church? Can he love me anymore after He gave His son to die for all of my sin and calls me his child? Where did Jesus spend most of His time? Where did Paul the apostle spend most of his time?
I don't know why there's so much Judgement around but maybe it's to justify people's own purposes for what they do and why they do it and i fully encourage anyone to search their heart to find out why the church exists and whether it's the relevant place for Jesus love to be expressed, but having a crack at others because they no longer share or believe in the same values? Where's the love in that?
What really bothers me about all this is that it just reinforces my feelings about the local church and that the very command that Jesus did give, (which had nothing to do with Sunday morning church) - Love the Lord with all your heart and love others as Jesus loves you - is not the first thing on the church's mind, it's whether you attend somewhere on a Sunday morning that's important. How about asking people questions about how there going with the 'law of Christ' rather than the law of tradition and man?

Ah! Good ol' works-based theology. If I do something, then God will respond, people will be saved, the whales will be happy.. etc, etc. In contradiction, I heard a radical theory once that suggests that God loves us - and that as a result, we are able to participate in fellowship, able to love each other, and the world we inhabit. I guess that could even happen in a building, but I don't believe it's a requirement!

As for me, I still meet in a church building regularly, and my main reasoning for this is that I have a whole bunch of friends that meet there also. It's convenient for us to spend time together on a designated night. I used to feel guilty for going to church for 'social' reasons, but now I see that as the main purpose. The Bible certianly suggests that we should not give up meeting together, but that doesn't mean we have to use a special buiding. I believe it's a call to fellowship and community - the true church - the body of Christ. Not a little stone hut with a cross-shaped lightning rod.

I completely agree. I live in an entirely different part of the world but things are quite the same here. In fact, sometimes I get the feeling that societies are getting more and more dogmatic each day, as if there has started a reversal of what we had learned so far as human beings.

These kind of actions make me mad. People, "good church people" should not judge others. They don't even realise their doing so is a big turn off to some people. A "good" Christian should be loving not judging. (Just like you said)

I agree with you on all counts and would NOT attend church if it were not for the fact that I look forward to it so much every week that I simply do not want to miss it. I suppose I am one of the fortunate Christians in Canada who has a really great church in my neighbourhood. So, why do I go? Corporate worship through music brings me closer to God. Meeting with like-minded people encourages me in my faith, and hearing the in depth Bible based preaching teaches me about God, inspires me in my disciplship, and gives me a yearning to learn more. God's word is so very rich and deep and I find that on my own I cannot draw all the truth out of it like our gifted pastor does. I would never judge anyone for not going to church, but instead hope that they find a chruch that would fill the deep needs in one's spiritual life.

Well said, Terry! And Glenn, I agree with much of your rant. "Christians" have given Christ-followers a bad rap, and I wish they would just keep their mouths shut if they won't seriously try to emulate the Lord. Face it, most pew-sitters practice their ignorance with a truly religious fervor. Question: After all this time since this post, why haven't you followed it up? You appear to have much to say.

Paganism as it is..

I understand your point about some people holding up mere church service attendance as the eleventh commandment. However, I think the point the Bible makes is a bit different than your take on this topic. In Hebrews 10:25 (NLT) it says, "And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near."

True, we need to be out in the community doing God's work and Sunday is not the only day we can meet for fellowship with other believers, but we all need to belong to a local church. God established the local church with leaders for a reason. I think it is wise not to second-guess His plan and think we are beyond the need to belong to the local church and submit to the leaders He establishes there.

My 2 cents,

Christopher
