Christian or just a follower of Jesus?

Words, even though I was always told that sticks and stones will break my bones and names(words) can never hurt me, they (words) can still play a pretty significant part in life and beliefs. I think I've come to the conclusion that to call someone a Christian doesn't necessarily mean that they follow the teachings and life of Jesus. That being a 'Christian' is often wrapped up in the local church or religion and there can be a big difference! It's also interesting that other religions often see a 'Christian' as a hypocrite yet see Jesus as a great man or even believe Him to be the the Son of God.

I think we will always be labelled hypocrites for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, we are! We speak of perfection from imperfect hearts and minds, and we claim to know thata which can never be fully known.

Secondly, and probably more importantly, we often come across as though we've got it together, have the answers, are better people, etc. That's why I'm always thrilled when I make a new Christian friend who is up front and honest about their failings. If we were a little more honest about who we are as Christians (the OBJECT of God's love, not the SUBJECT of the faith) then I think Christ might get to shine through us in a way that is attractive to others.

Yep, definately right about the second one. The local church and 'Christians' in general have a lot to answer for in being judgemental and not seeing the logs in their eyes and coming across arrogant and 'perfect'. It's funny isn't it how we can read scripture but not do anything about it?
It's the worst kind of attribute though in Australia, as us ozzi's love to bring down a tall poppy and 'Christians' in Oz are often seen as the tall poppy who needs to be brought down a peg or two. What's interesting though is that those groups who have just loved unconditionally (or seem to) such as world vision, care australia, and probably many others have a better reputation than the 'Christian' church because love comes first. Makes me wonder who really is being more like Jesus.
